Helpful for beginners and advanced users alike
I had heard of Scrivener several times, but it wasn’t until I saw Karen Prince’s video on why she loves writing with Scrivener that it dawned on me this was a _writer’s_ software. Hey, I’m a writer! I could use this thing! I quickly tracked down Katytastic’s video on how she uses Scrivener to outline her books, and on the basis of those two videos, I was sold. Once I got my hands on Scrivener I was a little daunted. The program is highly flexible and can adapt to your individual writing style, and can be used for very simple to highly complex projects. For everyone who is accustomed to software that is utterly inflexible, this means adjusting your brain a bit. What? Software that I can adapt to my own style? What an idea! After watching all the tutorials and noodling around for a few days, I realized I didn’t really want to go back and search through the video tutorials every time I wanted to understand a feature. The officially supplied tutorials are wonderful, cogent and nicely done, and I’ve watched some of them two or three times, but I like to be able to look up a feature, read about it, test it in my computer, and think about how I’d like to use it. That’s where Gwen Hernandez’s book comes in. So far as I can tell, she covers every feature in Scrivener from the most basic to the most advanced, and the book is arranged in a logical, useful order. It’s easy to find the information you want, and her explanations are clear and concise, with the usual “Dummies” style humor added for fun. The book has a good solid, useful and comprehensive index, a feature I find immensely useful – one of my pet peeves is technical manuals that have an index written by someone (perhaps the office cat?) without a clue what an index is used for. So thank you Gwen Hernandez for getting my Scrivener use off to a great start, and now that I’ve been using it for a few months, for helping me figure out how all the other great features can help make my writing life easier.

    How To Use This Book
Scrivener is a valuable tool for all writers, but learning the nuances of the program takes some practice and self-education.. The power of Scrivener is its utility, not necessarily its simplicity. That’s where this book comes in. Scrivener for Dummies by Ms. Hernandez is the bible for the program. Every question that I had when beginning with Scrivener was addressed in this book. Ms. Hernandez has a background in technical writing and teaching, so the beauty of this book is the straightforward nature in which all is taught; it avoids wordiness, and gives the writer the information that they need, quickly and painlessly. That said, the author does have a sarcastic sense of humor that comes across on the page and makes the subject entertaining. Fun!This book is laid out in a practical fashion, and one could run through the book from beginning to end for a crash course on the software. Alternatively, one could play with the Scrivener program and use this book for answering questions as they arise. The best method, perhaps, is to use the Scrivener program for a while, answering questions as they arise with this book, and then taking a weekend to go through the book itself; there are many hidden gems in Scrivener that one would not find unless one took the time to do the quick read of this book once they are familiar with the program.I took Ms. Hernandez’s one-month online course on Scrivener, and highly recommend it for those that have questions about the program, those that would rather have a course than reading this book, or those that want a highly personalized daily study flow with simple homework and live online weekly sessions with the author. Note: if one is dedicated to learning Scrivener on their own, the information is all in this book; the course is merely another way to learn, and for me, I am glad to have both methods as I plan to use Scrivener as a full-time writer. I am glad to be doing the inexpensive course, and also to own this book. To me, once a writer makes the decision to use Scrivener, the book plus the course are suggested to learn the program in detail, and together they still work out to be significantly cheaper than just the cost of the competitor’s software alone, such as MS Word. A quick search of the author’s name will bring one to her website for course information. Gwen Hernandez.Scrivener for Dummies is a winner! I keep it alongside my computer to answer questions as they arise. A final point: although I enjoy my Kindle for almost all my reading, I strongly advise buying Scrivener for Dummies in paper form: A writer will be moving around in the book, particularly to answer questions as they arise during one’s use of Scrivener, and although jumping around in Kindle is doable, it will certainly take much more time than using this book in paper form (I even have a couple Post-It note bookmarks in sections that I use often or will reference again, and although Kindle has bookmarks, too, I can access what I need instantly with the paper version).

Don’t be a Dummy, Use this Book to Help You Master Scrivener
Scrivener For Dummies by Gwen Hernandez is a comprehensive guide to using Scrivener for the Mac and Windows. The book focuses primarily on the Mac version of the software which is the more mature software of the two.The book focuses on:- The software interface- Setting up your binder- Using templates (fiction / non-fiction / etc)- Writing – setting default features for the software to speed up your process- Organizing your files (folders / chapters / characters / pages)- Setting up target word counts for your books or articles- Using the different views (corkboard / writing / outine)- Using footnotes and in-line citations- Compiling your manuscript book preparation- Exporting your filesThis book is broken down into sections / chapters with detailed snapshots of particular steps. This book is written for the most basic of users of the software and the guides are really well-done. The author explains the process and the use of the software in simple to digest / simple to understand terminology. This book is written as a reference guide for the software, and should be used that way.If you are a writer of any kind (novelist, blogger, non-fiction) than this book is for you. You do have to purchase the accompanying software (and you can download a trial at: http://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener.php), but if want you are interested in taking your writing to the next level and keeping it incredibly organized than this book and the Scrivener software is for you.

A good book on the subject
This is the most informative book I’ve read on Scrivener. Easy to understand. Easy to find what you’re looking for. This is the 3rd book I’ve purchased on the subject. I wish I’d bought this one first.

  6. The Reading Room

As a Scrivener newbie, I can honestly say this is the book I’ve found most helpful. I have no hesitation in recommending it – 5 StarsI don’t find Scrivener a particularly intuitive programme, but this guide has certainly helped me to understand all its wonderful idiosyncrasies.▪ Detailed – More than 350 pages packed with information.▪ The Whole Story – From outlining, to writing, editing, and exporting your files, this book covers it all.▪ Dummies format – It clearly highlights the things you must remember, and separates-out the technical stuff. It also shows where you need to take particular care with something, and lists numerous handy hints.▪ Writing style – This is a technical book, and it is written as such, but I also found it easy to follow and pleasant to read.▪ It’s not a novel! – Seems obvious, but I found that reading small chunks at a time and then applying the information within the Scrivener program was much more effective that trying to cover too much in one session.▪ Illustrated – There are examples of screenshots throughout, and while the font on these is quite small, I found they still helped in getting oriented within the program itself.▪ Indexed – There’s an A to Z index at the back, but the extensive contents list at the front of the book is a great place to start if you’re after broad-based advice on a particular topic.I purchased a copy of this book a couple of months ago and it’s fast become my go-to reference for all things Scrivener. I’ve yet to have a problem when using the Scrivener program that this guide hasn’t helped me resolve. And, without it, I’d of missed so many of the features that makes using Scrivener so special.

If you’re a writer, Scrivener is an excellent tool. It does, however, have a steep learning curve that causes people to give up on it. It’s interactive tutorial is so obscure that it alone can turn people off.But this book is a user-friendly guide that helps get readers up to speed on Scrivener. It’s well done, clear and concise.Scrivener is very good if you want to keep all your research material close at hand as you work. But good as the book is, it doesn’t disguise the face that Scrivener is a complicated piece of software.
