If you are wondering…
I bought this because I need thunderbolt port, and I really want to have a new generation of thunderbolt card. If you are questioning if it is suitable to your “not the latest motherboard” you can find the compatible motherboard on ASUS website and compare it with your motherboard.However, if you want a more brief answer, I am here to tell you that it is functional with my not so old generation (Z790-E ASUS rog strix); it was not on the list of compatible motherboard. ASUS brand might have to update their compatible list.I need a little tweak in my BIOS in order to install the card correctly to use. It does have fast charging if you have a separate 6-pins PSU cable ( it is not included in the package). Overall, I would say it is good with its price; not so expensive.

Failed Product
Doesn’t work at all. The drivers load, but the device still is unknown. Thunderbolt is such a mess and I’m shocked at how little support there is. I needed a thunderbolt port for a specific device. Now I want to return all of it it’s such a pain.

Promising Tech, But Still Too Limited
Thunderbolt 5 is promising, but support is still minimal. This card requires a motherboard with a Thunderbolt 5 header, and only a handful of Intel 800-series boards have one right now. It also needs a full PCIe 4.0 x4 slot to get proper bandwidth. Without that setup, you’ll only get Thunderbolt 4 speeds. I couldn’t test Thunderbolt 5 capability for that reason, so buyers should check compatibility carefully before purchasing.

Triple check your Motherboard AND Asus
Triple check on your PC’s motherboard manufacturer’s website AND the ASUS website to fully ensure that they are compatible. I had to go to external resources to find out that this was not compatible with my PC’s motherboard.

ASUS makes some good hardware; but their setup documentation and driver support for their motherboards and expansion cards leaves much to be desired. This card would only recognize USB2.0 on my ASUS B840 motherboard. Support teams (multiple calls) did not have an answer. Figured it out on my own only through much trial and error with BIOS settings and drivers.
