So Far So Good
Just downloaded and installed this free software. I fired up the word processor, and so far, I have had no problems with it. I saved in Word format, and it did not crash. I will leave it open all day to see if it crashes during screen saver activity and sleep. At this point, I am glad I downloaded it and confident that it will be stable. Lots of fonts and the usual menus I expect to see in a word processor. And it’s Word compatible. I don’t think you can ask for much better than that. The feature set will improve over time, and it is hackable, so perhaps I will customize it to my liking in C++. Updates to follow.02/18/2014 Update: Still works great. No crashes. A very stable and useable product. I love it. And I don’t have to shell out over $100 for Office. I am running Mavericks on a late 2013 Intel 21.5″ iMac with a fourth-gen 3 GHz i7 processor/turbo boost to 3.9 GHz, 16 GB 1600 GHz DDR3 RAM, and 500 GB SSD. It is wicked fast.

It really works
I’m on a MAC so any software you want to buy is horrendously expensive and lately PC’s are not any better. It’s really refreshing to find software that is free and really really works, I’ve bought a copy of iWorks and this is the most convoluted hunk of crap ever coded, it used to be pretty good but every update they close off more comparability and basically force you to use their formats and now takes 4 steps to even start a new doc and are forced to put it on their servers, REALLY? Well I need to be able to use edit and send files in .doc and xls and convert .pps to jpegs and allot of other mundane tasks that should be easy and a no brainer. Well I can do all of that on Open office. Not only that, it includes software I’ve never had access to before. It’s hard to learn but I’ve managed to set up a decent data base, that’s something I’d never been able to do with MS Office or iWork.

Terrible! it turned off every time I used for more than 3 min
I thought it was going to be great, the interphase looked good and I started working on it ok, bust just after a couple of minutes it suddenly reported an error and turned off, same again and again, I just dropped it after 30 min trying to make it work correctly and got the Microsoft Office for Mac instead, paying my hundred bucks first of course. Bottom line, what looked as a very promising alternative ended being completely disappointing, having it for free doesn’t justify delivering a bad product.

Very Nice
Since I’ve been retired I haven’t had a real need for a high end word processing and spreadsheet software worth paying the high price for the most popular software. You can’t go wrong with this and it can save to the cloud drive if you want. I was concerned that it saves the document in a ods file, but found out you can save it to any format even xls. It maybe a new program but it does fit my needs. I have a need for a word processor and a spreadsheet program, but without of all the extras in the popular software. It can do allot and they are expanding it more. You can find almost any type of template you need. Some components are a little different than MS like entering formula etc, but thats a small learning curve. Was happy I found this software as a free download

Great Free Software AND easy download!
I had this program on my Windows PC. It was a welcome alternative to the Windows equivalent and it was free!! Even though I tried and tried to use the software that came with my MacBook Pro to produce the documents I use to organize my life, I just could not use them with confidence! Open Office suite of programs are comparable to the Windows software and that makes it easy to adapt to the Mac. So far I only use the spreadsheet and word processing parts of the suite, but having the rest for presentations, etc. is nice to have as well. Thanks Amazon for making it an easy download. As usual, you came to my rescue.

Great software package at no cost!
I needed a spreadsheet program for my MacPro. My Office files were for Microsoft only. I’m retired. Didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for a group of programs I would not use. This Apache OpenOffice had good reviews and help available. I installed it in less than a half hour, even though I’m still a novice on Mac products. The spreadsheet program is easy for me to use: I’ve worked with spreadsheets for 30 years. With all the icons on the open page, I think anyone would find it simple to set up. Additionally, it can apparently support MS Excel spreadsheets. Enjoy.

YAKHTUO — You Already Know How To Use OpenOffice
I grew up using MSOffice at work. I used OpenOffice for Windows on my personal Compaq laptop for years and found it to be an effortless transition between the two applications. After purchasing a MacBook Pro I was very happy to discover the availability of OpenOffice for Mac here on Amazon for $0 charge.The only provided application I use is the spreadsheet. As with the Windows version I have complete bi-directional accessibility to Excel spreadsheets. I’ve had no need for the many other included applications — word processor, presentation manager, data base manager and a drawing program. If the compatibility of the spreadsheet function holds true across the other applications it will satisfy your needs.

It’s okay, but not what I thought it would be…
I initially downloaded this app to be a format translator between Pages and Word, but it didn’t exactly do what I wanted. Formatting between the two got wonky, so any files I worked on in Pages and wanted to export as a .doc would open fine in OpenOffice, but once saved, formatting still looked funny when I opened the file in Word. Plus, the latest available file type to save as in OO was MS Word 97-2000, which is probably why there might have been formatting issues (since I was trying to prep the files to be opened in Word 2010). It’s okay for a free download though; it at least gave me a glimpse as to what the converted Pages file might look like in Word.
